Lighting Retrofits

A lighting retrofit is the practice of replacing components in a lighting system with counterparts which use less energy than the original. The reduced energy consumption results in lower utility bills, generating operational cost savings. A well-executed lighting retrofit will quickly recover the initial cost of the retrofit and continue to produce energy savings as compared against the original system.

As technology progresses more efficient and effective lighting systems have been introduced each year. Recent developments in Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have made them viable replacements for many older technologies, while new fluorescent technologies such as T5 continue to achieve new heights in efficiency.

The benefits of a lighting retrofit are tremendous, encompassing much more than just a reduced utility bill:

  • Environmental benefits from reduced electrical consumption results in less demand on coal-fired, natural gas and nuclear power plants. The reduction in CO2 pollution and the conservation of precious natural resources cannot be overstated.
  • Many newer lighting technologies often present longer-lasting devices resulting in lower lighting maintenance costs over time.
  • Old fixtures, lamps, and ballasts are typically able to be recycled, resulting in less waste going to landfills.
  • Safety and Comfort: A lighting retrofit can improve the perception of a lighted space, the level of comfort feel while in that space, and the ability to properly see and perform tasks in that space.

Compared with many other building-system efficiency upgrades, lighting retrofits often offer the greatest return on investment with a relatively low initial cost.

GR Energy Management Inc. can take you from start to finish with your lighting retrofit, including designing the lighting layout, determining the best fixtures for your use, incentive application and installation and maintenance of the new lighting system.
